Personally, I don't have a favorite time period but an affinity toward certain events, namely political intrigue. So Ancient Greece where you have city-states vying for control of the peninsula while outside forces (Persia, Rome) slowly creep in. Or perhaps the Roman Republic and Empire with Senators and generals basically doing an Ancient WOrld House of Cards. Anytime where you have proxy wars and political infighting (between countries or maybe even a ruling family ie. House o Saud) I find interesting. Currently, the situation in the Middle East I have found to be most relevant when discussing this due to all the competing factions.

So what's your favorite time period? Or are you like me an have a favorite trend? Both? And what do you find most interesting about what you said?

20th century, WWI, WWII and the Cold War.

Good times..

20th century is one of my favorite centuries simply because it was the culmination of centuries of military expansion on a global scale that ultimately led to a climatic war whose effects we still see today. I found a new channel on youtube called "Extra History" that basically does a different historical topic and does a "series" of about 8-10 minute videos usually every week on the subject. Their WWI videos I felt did a great job at looking at the direct causes of the war. I'll link part 2 (part 1 is mroe of the background which you probably know, I recommend part 2 as it get's right to the point. Part 1 might bore you into not watching part 2 but part 2 should get you wanting to watch part 3 and the rest of the series)

Thank you for the recommendation. Since I'm a lonely depressed unemployed Norwegian man who has nothing to do I'll take a look at it right now.

Let me know what you think. It might seem a little childish (it is animated) but I enjoy taking a seat back and watching someone else explain a subject in visuals. If you like it, check out their other videos (I'm not a fan of the latest Jon Snow series they're doing but everything else was cool).

No greek times.....What are they teaching you?

there was nothing like a "greek era"

the first greek city states came into existance about 1000 bc and the greek languange was dominant in the byzantine empire until 1500 ad. the greek arts and philosophy actually survived until then aswell, there just were less great philosophers.

1000 bc until 1500 ad is from the ancient world until the renaissance, wich is, why it wouldnt make any sense to call that the "greek era" although, the greeks were most dominant in the ancient world, conquering for example, Persia, and influencing the whole world with their colonies

Liberation from eternal poverty - achieving material wealth and losing spirituality.

By the way, I can't decide if my favorite era is Emperor Peter's time, or Empress Catherine the Great era. (hey International, in Peter's Russia, half of Russians joined churches or monasteries forcing Peter to decree law banning people to join en masse as economy and society suddenly found it self in lack of craftsmen, workers and soldiers)

Preindustrial spirituality is not true spirituality. It's people seeking a desperate break from crushing poverty. People in desperate situations need someone to tell them that everything is alright, and religion served this function excellently.

I'd go with Emperor Peter's time, if by that you mean Peter the Great that shattered the Swedish Army at Poltava.

You're back!

Like international said, I think I like Peter more. He helped modernize Russia (they did not experience industrialization for quite some time which contributed significantly to their disastrous defeat in WWI). He single handedly built the Russian navy and contributed greatly to Russia's culture.

Yes, i mean Peter the Great (Pyotr Veliky).

You see, Russia always had a problem with people calling themselves 'elite', whether that's 17th century boyars, 20th century nomenklatura or 21th century oligarchs. They are slowing Russia down. Emperor Peter had huge sacks to order reforms while being surrounded with powerful boyars, just look at Table of Ranks, even the name sound awesome.

The only thing i do not agree with Peter's feudalist system of peasant being bond to the land (Peter believed peasant should be tied to land like artisan to crafting or merchants to trade). If he only liberated peasants from parasite nobility, and let them move and start their own jobs - combined with Table of Ranks, Russia would probably be even stronger and larger in the future.

So either Peter for creating Table of Ranks, or Catherine for funding science, education and culture in Russia.
