"In Russia live Russians. Any minority, from anywhere, if it wants to live in Russia, to work and eat in Russia, should speak Russian, and should respect the Russian laws. If they prefer Sharia Law, then we advise them to go to those places where that's the state law. Russia does not need minorities. Minorities need Russia, and we will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell 'discrimination'. We better learn from the suicides of America, England, Holland and France, if we are to survive as a nation. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of culture or the primitive ways of most minorities. When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest first, observing that the minorities are not Russians." ~ Vladimir Putin Thoughts?

That would make sense, if there were a bunch of nations for specific types of people, but there isn't, and if anyone tried, they'd be executed. The world can either bend to the will of it's people, or it can provide a place for said people to flourish.

In Russia lives Russians In Iran lives Persians In Japan lives Japanese In America lives Americans In Canada lives Canadians In Nigeria lives Nigerians I don't see why in Russia must live Russians, Persians, Japanese, Americans, Canadians, and Nigerians. When you move to a country, you should acculturate (Not necessarily assimilate). Be a citizen of the country, don't move to a new country and be a citizen of your old. I live in Canada. If a Persian wants to come live in Canada and still wants to practice Islam and Persian culture in a peaceful manner, I am fine with that. However, he must recognize that he is a Canadian before he is a Persian and if he thinks he is Persian first, he should leave.

Except that's not true, as it's a multi-ethnic country that consists of far more people than just Russians. The muslims Russia has to deal with were forcefully conquered into it's territory in a series of long, drawn out wars in the 19th century. After the fall of the Soviet Union some of these muslim nations wanted to gain independence the same as the Ukraine, Belarus, etc had., yet it was not granted to them. Russia insisted on them joining their new Federation, so it came to the first Cechen War out of which the extremism the country knows today resulted. The people Putin refers to are not immigrants. They are conquered and colonized as much as Indians were in America. Russian customs and laws forced upon them.

Not necessarily ethnic Russians, but people who are Russian citizens, speak Russian, and follow the Russian laws. Most of the people conquered do this. Remember that the people who were conquered by Russia in the 19th century are no longer living today. The people of Chechnya weren't alive when their land was conquered. Those who were conquered have the right to fight against the Russian government, but those who were born in Russia should respect the Russian laws. If they want to live under Sharia law, then Putin is simply telling them to go to a place where that is the state law. They are living in Russia under Russian rule and should respect the laws, language, and culture of Russia.

Can you elaborate on this further? Because I can't quite follow your strain of thought there. Do you think within ~150 years these people, large societies, gave up their culture, customs and languages to become Russian, even though they were conquered by force? Because as far as I'm concerned the small Russian Republic of Dagestan alone has 47 regional and distinct languages, which all can be assorted to different socities, cultures, customs. None of which is Russian. Now let me ask you. If the USA was to be conquered by Russia and your children were born after the invasion. Would they be Russian in thought, language, customs and culture? What about your grandchildren? 150 years are 2 human lifes.

As I said to Gardevoir, I am fine with them having their own language, culture, etc. However, they should still respect the laws of which they are subject to unless they are oppressed under these laws. If my children were born after an extremely theoretical Russian conquering of the United States, I would raise them with American culture but I would expect them to follow the laws as long as they are not being oppressed. The people of Chechnya are fighting for Sharia law, they can simply migrate to Iran if they want such.

You are fairly quick to judge these people, especially when you picked the part with the Shariah law up from good Putin. How much of an insight do you have there? Would you deny them the chance of at least having a higher ideal of self-determination as a driving force, much as Ireland, Scotland, Catalonia, or even the people who originally started the uprising in Syria? The revolution in Syria was stolen out of the hands of honest citizens by radical elements to further their own sinister agenda and this happened in the Caucasus region too. In 1991 they declared themselfs a republic as any other breaking away from the Soviet Union, bearing no mention of the Shariah law. Only in 2007, after 2 devastating wars and years of antagonizing insurgency, the foreign mujahideen movement declared a North Caucasus Emirate, to be established under Sharia law. I see the struggle for independence of these republics and the insurgency as two different political entities, but I can't of course expect you to do the same. So let's settle it at this and let me wish you a nice day.

There must be some sort of reason that these people did not get the same political independence as the Kazakhs, Turkmen, etc did
