I have a couple suggestions:

1. Allow manual disbanding of units - sometimes there are no neutrals around to suicide expensive units, and so it can be expensive to maintain them if you don't need them anymore. Maybe an option to disband units to help with this?

2. There should be some negative consequences to going into huge debt. I'm not talking about -100 or anything, but at -2000, -5000, etc things should start happening. Maybe your units disband for lack of pay, or "defect" and go neutral for lack of pay. Its more realistic that your armies wont fight if you cant pay them. I say this with great sadness because it is fun to late join a game and build a huge army you cant sustain and crush randoms.

Are people allowed to run these huge deficits? I never tried to purchase beyond a negative balance. If this is true, then there should be a huge penalty for running a deficit. maybe a 5% loss of troops per round in each city until its neutral or a positive number.

Yes, it is a common strategy.

I'm not sure this is actually needed from a 'reality' perspective: in real life, countries run up huge deficits as well.

Then again, in real life, armies do desert for lack of pay, so something is to be said for this idea!

Sometimes you need to get rid of some unimportant marines or some battlesip locked on the Black Sea, you can't do it and this unimportant unit sucks money out of your account. Disband order would really help in this kind of situation.

Revolts are also great idea, I see them as two options:
1. Neutral revolt - when a player is on a large debt, people get angry. Cities which are defended by small amount of troops will soon start to revolt.
Bigger debt = higher chance for a riot.
More units in the city = lower chance for a riot.
First cities you would lose would be these ones which are located far away from other, capitals where you keep most of the troops would be last. After this kind of revolt city would become neutral with a group of neutral militia.
2. Player revolt - you have your starting country, and enemy takes one of the cities but then does not continue his conquest. After a while you are able to initiate spontaneous riot in the captured city, this riot would spawn a group of militia, if this group would be stronger than troops which are holding the city - you get your city back.

USA has been in dept forever lol trillions. has no bearing on troops only ability to buy and not being able to build troops thats a BIG disadvantage.

I would love a disband option. sometimes, the militia and infantry become quite a burden. Every penny counts, and I usually end up with lots of transports that just sit around.

I like the disbanding idea a lot. So much money wasted in the past!

The revolting idea I like too, but only because I like the idea of neutrals fighting back...

The disbanding option would be fantastic. You don't know how many times Ive wasted green on tanks, and ended up only needing 5/30 I built.

Revolts are stupid. I would agree if Afterwind is supposed to be a realistic nation simulator, but it's a multiplayer war game. There are no revolts in Risk or Civilization (ok maybe civil disorder, but that's different). wtf are they going to do here? Disbanding units is a good idea though.

You would not ret a revolt in a real world situation for running a deficet. A revolt generaly happens when a country is telling its troops to do things that are imoral or refusing to listen to the camaders in the field. There are other resons for a revolt but those are the BIG 2

Along with disbands, I wonder if police armed with riot shields will come into play.

Like the disband idea

Also like the revolt idea but only under -5000 $ a turn and you have no money left. A "Stableness" slider from countries would slowly go down until they reach 0%, in which militia will spawn in each city until the country has turned into neutral or when you get money again.

Taking over cities and such changes the stableness slider too except not as fast and you will rarely get it, unless you keep taking it over and over and over or something.

It might be another strategy for people to use. Taking over enemy cities all the time until they become unstable. Becoming fully stable again takes like 10 turns (10% per turn).

When stableness slider reaches 0% it will keep spawning them until it reaches 25% again.

Disbanding units sounds nice, though I'm against revolts since it'll just make everything - especially on a big map - lulzcomplicated.

I love the idea of disbanding, I'd actually suggested it because I hadn't seen this topic. Full support for the idea.

I hope I can disband units because I'm tried of kamakaze units for income money. I can't kamakaze all the units I want though. Adding up to a lagging income. Once I massed 1,000+ units due to this. -_- It really hurt my income. That and I only had 1 continent. I don't really like the revolting option though.
